Borussia Dortmund is in crisis and the Champions League seems a long way off. After the defeat against Kiel, Nuri Şahin announced consequences.
While Holstein Kiel was celebrating, the Borussia Dortmund players around captain Emre Can and defender Nico Schlotterbeck were seen in a war of words. The Ultras confronted the professionals (read more about the allegations here). Their heads hung, the expression on their faces said it all. BVB was only 3-0 down against newly promoted Holstein Kiel and ended up losing 4-2. This puts the club in ninth place in the Bundesliga with just 25 points.
Afterwards, coach Nuri Şahin had already announced consequences: “It is clear that there will be consequences,” said the 36-year-old after what he described as a “shameful non-performance”.
The defeat in Kiel puts BVB under further pressure, as even their minimum goal of fourth place in the Bundesliga – after the worst first half of the season in ten years – is at risk. Lars Ricken, Sports Director, spoke of an “undignified and embarrassing” appearance, but emphasized that there would be no discussion about the coach for the time being (you can read more about his statements and those of Captain Can here).
In the analysis, Şahin took “full responsibility for this performance” and made it clear that it could not be excused by the recent flu cases circulating in the team. The coach explained: “Even if we had played with eleven sick players, we couldn’t achieve such a performance.”
Şahin wants to focus on transparency when coming to terms with the defeat. “Honesty when you look in the mirror. Honesty towards the team. Honesty in the club,” he demanded: “It’s time for us, both in the team and as a whole, to tell ourselves the truth.”
The truth is that BVB gave away the game in Kiel and can hardly make any sporting claims at the moment. “Anyone who is eight points behind the Champions League places is not allowed to talk about the Champions League. Our reality is different,” said Nuri Şahin at the Sky microphone.
