The Sloten Mill in Amsterdam Nieuw-West runs on volunteers. No fewer than seventy people keep the mill open to visitors seven days a week. To keep this up, at least thirty new volunteers are needed, so Marianne Swaan set up a callnhhelpt.nl.

Marianne herself ended up at the water mill thirteen years ago after a long illness: “I live nearby and volunteer work brought me out of my house again. I was quite alone, but now I have a ‘mill family’. It is really very warm here”.

Jean Brugman has been a volunteer at the mill for 33 years. As a wedding registrar, he married his daughter there in 1991 and never left. Jean is eager for new colleagues: “We are short of dozens of volunteers to keep the mill running, such as millers, counter staff, tour guides and handy people for maintenance.”

The Sloten mill is a water mill. “In the event of enormous flooding in Amsterdam Nieuw-West, this mill can help to pump out the water, together with the pumping stations,” says miller Maud van Westerhoven.
