Anyone who has ever been to a Björk concert knows that it’s not just boring live versions of her songs. The singer’s gigs are more like art installations – performances in the truest sense.
But that also costs Björk strength. In an interview with the “Guardians” the Icelander has now made it clear why touring is a strenuous experience for her.
“The fundamentals are more flexible if I do it this way,” she said. “Maybe as a woman or a matriarch or whatever, I’m trying to make it so that people can actually have a life on the side. Since my youth, I have gently fought against this macho way people approach both films and touring.”
Björk wants to have a private life even on tour
Björk also explained why she would rather have a few cities on her schedule than travel halfway around the world. “Oh, let’s just work 18 hours a day, every single day, until everyone vomits,” the 59-year-old told the British newspaper sarcastically.
“I always wanted to exist alongside my art. You can have a private life with it. You can have children with it. You can have your partners there around you. I’m not saying that it always worked out the way I wanted it to. But at least I tried to create a world that was more open to things like that.”
In 2023, Björk ended her “Cornucopia” tour, for which she gave 45 gigs. The tour, or whatever Björk would call it, took the singer through North America, Europe, Oceania and Asia. After all, there are sometimes special concerts that hardly any other musician would dare to do.
