Frits Bolkestein is still considered the great inspiration for many VVD members. The liberal put the migration issue on the political agenda before Pim Fortuyn and Geert Wilders. Less prominent in memory is his decision not to become a minister himself during the first Purple cabinet (1994-1998), but to control ‘his’ cabinet from the House of Representatives as VVD leader.
