We find the answer in it Memory of Drenthe. The suffix ‘-laren’, and therefore also ‘Lare’, is derived from the Old Dutch word ‘boot’which means ‘clearing in the forest’. Such open spaces were often suitable for habitation and agriculture. According to it Memory of Drenthe ‘Laren’ refers to ‘near the forest meadow, open space in the forest’.
