Before the Bundesliga game against Bayer Leverkusen, Dortmund’s stadium announcer Norbert Dickel honored de Beer, who also worked in other positions at the club after his career, with a cracking voice. Then tears flowed from him.
“Dear Teddy,” said Dickel, sobbing at the stadium microphone at the end of a lengthy tribute, “we thank you for everything you were for us. May you now rest in peace.” Afterwards there was big applause. De Beer played with Dickel for BVB for four years in the late 1980s.
The fans were also prepared. “Rest in peace, Teddy” was written on a large banner in front of the south stand. The spectators also held up a huge flag depicting de Beer. There was also a large portrait of the BVB idol in the center circle.
