Macy’s has confirmed the closure of 66 stores in New York City and surrounding regions as part of its “Bold New Chapter” strategy announced in February 2024.
The US retail group explained that the plan aims to achieve sustainable and profitable sales growth. This includes closing around 150 “underperforming branches” over a period of three years. At the same time, investments are to be made in the remaining 350 locations.
“Closing a store is never easy, but as part of our Bold New Chapter strategy, we are closing underperforming Macy’s stores to pool our resources and prioritize investments in our future-focused locations where customers are already embracing improved product offerings and service,” said Tony Spring, CEO of Macy’s, Inc.
The company added that since implementing the new strategy, investments in Macy’s first 50 pilot stores have increased sales for three consecutive quarters and contributed to record levels of customer satisfaction for the Macy’s brand.
