While Borussia Dortmund has great planning security next summer, the contracts of eight players expire in 2026. These include Niklas Süle, captain Emre Can and Julian Brandt, who is the most valuable of this group with a market value of 35 million euros. In the background, there is already discussion about these personnel as to whether their future should continue to lie with BVB – with different tendencies.
There are two options for Süle, who was brought in as a leading player from FC Bayern in 2022 and given a top salary. Either let the contract expire or extend it. In the latter case, according to “Sport Bild”, the defender’s salary, who has so far not been able to live up to the high expectations, would have to be halved from around 14 million euros annually. Only in exceptional cases do the Black and Yellows want to pay salaries in the double-digit million range.
Not as much as top earner Süle, but Can also earns an impressive sum with a rumored 6 million euros per year. The situation is also difficult for the all-rounder, who like Süle is not without controversy. According to the magazine, Can’s prospects of getting a contract beyond 2026 are currently slim.
Brandt, however, should be kept. A new working paper is being discussed until 2028 for the vice-captain and fifth most valuable Dortmund player in the squad. The bosses believe that the midfielder’s performance could be more consistent, but in general they trust in Brandt’s qualities. Negotiations on further cooperation are expected to begin soon. We are already talking to Nico Schlotterbeck, who is tied down until 2027. His earnings are to be increased from 5 million to 7 million to 8 million euros. With a market value of 40 million euros, the 25-year-old is the most valuable German central defender.
BVB: Discussion about VfB Stuttgart’s Millot – Sané briefly discussed
But it’s not just the existing squad that is being discussed, but also possible external additions next summer. One name that came up was that of Enzo Millot. VfB Stuttgart’s top scorer can reportedly leave the Swabians for just under 20 million euros thanks to an exit clause. Above all, technical director Sven Mislintat, who brought Millot to VfB in 2021, is an advocate. However, there are concerns because BVB has recently often used the Stuttgart team. Last summer it was Waldemar Anton and Serhou Guirassy for a total of 40.5 million euros.
The personality of Leroy Sané was also briefly discussed. However, the winger would still not be able to be financed if he left FC Bayern for a free transfer – he is said to have earned around 20 million euros from the Munich team, plus a bonus. It is said that he would be more likely to move abroad again if Bayern did not make him a new offer. Paul Wanner (contract until 2027 at FC Bayern) has slipped further down Dortmund’s list of candidates because the top talent currently on loan to Heidenheim would probably cost at least 20 million euros and therefore too much.
