The Transfermarkt database is enriched by another milestone: the 1963/64 season in the Regionalliga Süd, the predecessor of the 2nd Bundesliga, has been completely entered. This started parallel to the Bundesliga, where FC Bayern wanted to be promoted at the time. But the Munich team missed promotion despite coming second. One of the greatest German footballers in history celebrated his debut in the promotion round.
After 38 match days, Hessen Kassel led the table with a three-point lead over FC Bayern. Both teams impressed with a great offense, but had problems in defense. Kassel scored one more goal than FC Bayern and had the best attack with 116 goals. However, both teams also conceded 61 goals, more than Eleventh-placed Waldhof Mannheim. The best goalscorer was Klaus-Peter Jendrosch from Kassel, who scored 34 times.
Both Kassel and FC Bayern failed in the promotion round. The champions ended up behind Hannover 96 in their group. FC Bayern missed out on promotion behind Borussia Neunkirchen. They had previously clearly prevailed against FC St. Pauli twice. In the 4-0 win in the first encounter with Hamburg, Franz Beckenbauer made his debut for Munich at the age of 18 years, 8 months and 26 days. The Kaiser scored his first goal in the first game. FC Bayern achieved promotion a year later. In the fourth Bundesliga season, they won the championship title for the first time (among all of Bayern’s historical placings).
