He is the most famous German basketball player in history. Now Dirk Nowitzki has found a new task.
Dirk Nowitzki returns to the world of the National Basketball Association (NBA), but in a new role. From the 2025/26 season, the former basketball star will work as an expert for the Prime Video streaming service. Amazon announced this on Tuesday via its social media channels. US media had already speculated about this collaboration in mid-December.
Nowitzki, who is considered one of the best European basketball players of all time, will analyze the NBA’s top games in the future and contribute his in-depth specialist knowledge. Blake Griffin, also a former NBA professional, will act in the same role. The broadcasts will be moderated by Taylor Rooks.
Amazon Prime secured the global broadcast rights for the NBA last year. The new contract runs for eleven years and covers around 100 games per season. These should also be broadcast in Germany on Prime Video.
Especially against this background, Nowitzki’s signing can definitely be seen as a coup. With his status as a Hall of Famer and his popularity in Germany, the Würzburger could be a key figure in marketing NBA content.
Nowitzki himself remains closely connected to the league as an expert. The long-time professional won the championship with the Dallas Mavericks in 2011 – the only German to date. In 2019, Nowitzki retired after 21 years at a club. He has been working as a consultant for the Mavericks since 2021.
