In the next few days Cobolli will take tests to ascertain the extent of the injury. With the Australian Open just around the corner (starting on Sunday 12 January) it could be a major problem for one of the most anticipated players of the Italian team in Melbourne. However, credit goes to Nardi, who is in great shape, and seems to have worked very well, especially from a physical point of view during the preseason. And the results can be seen: much more precise movements, superior mobility, all supporting a fluidity of the shot and an arm that has certainly never been lacking in the twenty-one year old from Pesaro, who in this way wins the second clash against Cobolli after the Next Gen Finals of 2023. “I’m sorry about Flavio, we know each other well. Before his retirement I think I played very well. The two qualifying matches gave me confidence and I am happy with my performances” said Nardi, world number 90, who will now face Bergs.

Victory for Lorenzo Sonego who manages to snatch a match that already seemed lost, also canceling a match point. The Turin native was down 5-2 in the third set, after losing serve to his opponent, Canadian Diallo, who had the chance to serve for the match at 5-3. However, the Italian made a great comeback, winning the match at the final tie break with a score of 7-6 (5) 2-6 7-6 (7) in over three hours of play. The world number 54 will now face the American Alex Michelsen. After a first set also won at tie break, Sonego suffered a lot from the Canadian’s physicality in the second, dominated by Diallo, while in the third the match seemed lost before the blue’s great comeback.
