The New England Patriots, who have dominated the NFL for years, have parted ways with their head coach Jerod Mayo after a disappointing season in all respects.
The franchise announced this decision after the unexpected 23:16 at the end of the main round against the Buffalo Bills, with which the six-time Super Bowl winner closed the season with 4:13 victories.
Only managed one season as Belichick’s successor
Mayo (38), who himself played for the Patriots, only took over his position from star coach Bill Belichick in January 2024. His last win as a head coach against the Bills cost the Patriots the number one pick in the draft, which went to the Tennessee Titans.
“For me it was one of the most difficult decisions I have ever made”said Patriots boss Robert Kraft about the separation. Former Patriots professional Mike Vrabel, who was head coach of the Titans and most recently worked as a consultant for the Cleveland Browns, is considered the successor candidate.
Baalke stays, Pederson has to go
The Jacksonville Jaguars also fired their head coach Doug Pederson on Monday, but retained their general manager Trent Baalke. Pederson’s firing came after the team finished 4-13 this season. Pederson has lost 18 of his last 23 games with the Jaguars. A new coach has not yet been found.
Long face: Doug Pederson lost his job in Jacksonville
With the firing of Mayo and Pederson, the NFL became “Black Monday” heralded – the Monday after the end of the main round, on which traditionally some coaches of the weakest teams lose their jobs.
Giants trust Daboll and Schoen
The New York Giants, on the other hand, gave coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen a job guarantee. Despite 3:14 wins, both will “continue with the organization in their respective roles”said a statement from President John Mara.
