South Korea’s Anti-Corruption Agency (CIO) asked police on Monday to arrest suspended President Yoon Suk-yeol. This is reported by the AP news agency. The arrest warrant against Yoon expires at midnight on Monday, which would require criminal case investigators to apply for a new arrest warrant. The suspended president refuses all cooperation and has barricaded himself in his official residence.

Last Friday, the anti-corruption agency failed to arrest Yoon at his official residence complex in the capital Seoul, as a military unit and the presidential security service blocked the passage. Yoon’s lawyer calls the arrest warrant “illegal and invalid.” The agency hopes that a police action will make a greater impression.

The South Korean judiciary suspects Yoon of “rebellion” because he unexpectedly declared a military state of emergency on December 3. He also unsuccessfully instructed the army to prevent a parliamentary meeting, which gives the right to reverse the state of emergency. Ultimately, enough representatives voted to reverse the power grab, after which Yoon was suspended.

If members of the presidential security service again obstruct a possible new arrest attempt, the police may arrest these employees. According to the South Korean news agency Yonhap, the police are currently considering that measure.
