The war in Ukraine is leading to a large stream of refugees who are looking for a safe place somewhere in Europe, far away from the war violence. Many people from Brabant sympathize and make room in their home. For example, Bernike and Dick van Mersbergen from Genderen want to receive refugees from Ukraine.
Every day Bernike and Dick see images of refugees on television. People from Ukraine try to get away between the rubble of the bombing. The couple from Genderen feels powerless, but wants to help. “We would like to do something, so we are going to make room so that we can accommodate people here in the near future,” says Bernike.
The entire top floor of their house is being set up for the refugees. There is enough space on that floor to accommodate a few people.
Bernike and Dick have called on the entire village to help refugees as well. Successfully. “Eight people have already committed. We think it will expand enormously.”
So far there are no refugees in Genderen. But when they come, they are in any case welcomed with open arms. “Our goal is that the refugees feel safe. We think that every person needs that,” says Bernike.
