A major fire on the roof of the Dirk van den Broek supermarket on the Noordgeest in Bergen op Zoom caused significant damage on New Year’s Eve. The fire was discovered around a quarter to one at night. There were meter-high flames visible and a lot of smoke was released. The roof has been destroyed, and there is a lot of smoke and water damage inside the store.
The fire brigade deployed a lot of equipment to combat the sea of flames. Several tankers and aerial platforms were deployed to prevent the fire from spreading to neighboring houses. The fire was under control around 2 a.m.
Despite the meter-high flames, the fire brigade was able to prevent the store from completely catching fire. There may have been some small pockets of fire inside, but the fire was not as intense as on the roof, the Zeeland-West Brabant Safety Region reported.
Arrest
A man was arrested during the firefighting efforts. He was arguing with the mobile unit present. When he was ordered to leave by the officers, he started arguing with a bystander. The man was arrested after a struggle.
Lots of smoke
A lot of smoke was released, so the fire brigade advised local residents to close their windows and doors. Around two o’clock the flames were extinguished and only white smoke was visible.
It is striking that there was a burnt-out car in the parking lot of the supermarket. It burned out in the afternoon.
