Celebrating Christmas in the supermarket. For many people it is a joy that most supermarkets in Brabant are open on Christmas Day. Such as for the customers of a store in Boxtel. They stopped by today to get that one forgotten ingredient for Christmas dinner or just to do some shopping in peace.

“I haven’t forgotten anything, but my grandson is with me so we are going to get something tasty,” says a woman who walks towards the entrance with her grandson in the shopping cart. “I think it’s fantastic that they are open today. I understand nor why they shouldn’t be open, times have changed.”

“If they were closed, I would have done with it.”

Another woman takes a shopping bag from her bicycle bag. “I just needed a soft drink. I forgot it yesterday. If they were closed I would have made do with it, but now I can go outside for a while. Despite the bad weather, I still got some exercise now.”

A girl just bought a baguette. She’s going out for a gourmet dinner tonight, she says. “I didn’t have time to get it because my friends and I all had to work. I also worked in a supermarket at Christmas. It doesn’t really matter to me whether the store is open or closed.” She looks at the baguette. “But now it’s fresh.”

“It’s ideal if you’ve forgotten something.”

At the shopping carts, a woman takes a cart out of the queue. She just delivered lunch for the stockers. “And now I have to do some shopping myself. It is very useful for me that shops are open, because I work all week. It is ideal if you have forgotten something.”

The website Openingstijden.nl has been keeping track of which supermarkets are open during the holidays since 2013. In Brabant you can go to one or more shops in almost every municipality. Only in Asten, Alphen-Chaam and in Altena and Geertruidenberg are all supermarkets closed.

Waiting for privacy settings…

A man has just walked out of the store. He came for his regular shopping, he didn’t need anything for Christmas. “I don’t have a problem with it, it’s actually easy. I hoped it wouldn’t be so busy and that turns out to be the case.”

“He forgot the mushrooms.”

Another man also just went grocery shopping with his son. “He’s going to cook for us tonight, but he forgot the mushrooms,” he laughs. “I don’t like it for the staff, but I personally like that the store is open. I think most people have done their shopping in advance, but apparently more people have forgotten something.”
