When Sinterklaas has left, many municipalities in the Netherlands place a large Christmas tree in a prominent place. This is also the case in Zoetermeer. These Christmas trees are already big, but where is the largest Christmas tree in the Netherlands? And is it bigger or smaller than the one in our city?

No matter how beautiful and large the Christmas tree in Zoetermeer is, the tree is dwarfed by the largest tree in the Netherlands. This tree can be found in the municipality of IJsselstein in Utrecht. Okay, let’s be honest: it’s not officially a tree, but the decorations make it really look like a huge Christmas tree with lights.

No tree, but what?

The largest Christmas tree in the Netherlands (and according to the Guinness Book of Records the largest in the world) is officially the Gerbrandy Tower, a transmission tower for radio and television broadcasts, (mobile) telecommunications and data storage. With a height of 366.80 meters, it is the tallest structure and therefore the tallest Christmas tree in the Netherlands.

The Christmas tree is illuminated for a month and has been decorated every year since 1992. The switching on of the lights will be celebrated on Saturday, December 7, 2024. There are 120 LED lights in the tree and they will burn until Monday, January 6, 2025.

That’s how big the Christmas tree in Zoetermeer is

There is no dispute that our Christmas tree is smaller than the transmission tower. But what’s the difference? The Christmas tree in Zoetermeer is 19 meters and therefore 347.80 meters smaller than the largest Christmas tree in the Netherlands.
