“The fire produces a lot of smoke,” says Remke Hoedemaker, spokesperson for the safety region. “We will send out an NL alert and ask people to close windows and doors. Also turn off the automatic air conditioning, otherwise air will still come in.”
There is a large fire brigade presence at the beach tent. “The floor has now been removed, so it can no longer be extinguished from the inside,” says the spokesperson. “The scenario now is that the fire brigade allows the beach tent to burn out in a controlled manner.”
The beach tent was empty and there were no injuries.
At 8:20 p.m., the spokesperson for the safety region announced that the NL Alert had been withdrawn. “There may have been asbestos present in the building, but this was not found during measurements,” he says. “A crane has just arrived to remove a wall to better extinguish the fire.” The fire was out around 9 p.m.
Fire spreads quickly
Although the beach tent has a fixed structure made of stone, the spokesperson also sees many wooden parts, which makes extinguishing the fire more difficult. “The fire usually spreads faster at temporary beach tents, but there is also a lot of wood visible at this one.”
