The Explosive Ordnance Disposal Service of Defense (EOD) dismantled heavy fireworks on a vacant lot opposite the King Willem II stadium on Sunday evening after the Willem II – NEC football match. The bomb experts use a special camera robot to inspect the so-called fireworks shells.

Observant local residents noticed earlier in the evening, before the match, that strangers were digging pipes. They did not trust the situation and immediately called the police. A police bomb scout assessed the situation as ‘so dangerous’ that assistance from the EOD was necessary.

Using the robot, experts were able to safely determine how the heavy fireworks could best be dismantled. The five fireworks shells were in buried pipes and were neutralized by the EOD in a controlled manner.

After dismantling, the fireworks were transferred to a specialized company for safe disposal and destruction.

When the site was cordoned off, someone automatically came to the police and wanted to ‘take away’ the fireworks. He has been arrested.
