The series continues: Werder Bremen deservedly defeated 1. FC Union Berlin on matchday 15 of the Bundesliga with a clear score of 4:1 (3:1).
Marco Grüll earned top marks for the hosts with his early double (13th and 17th minutes). Mitchell Weiser (45th) and Jens Stage (87th) also scored for Bremen and András Schäfer for the guests (23rd). The Bremen team are celebrating their fourth competitive game win in a row and have climbed to sixth place, at least for the time being, while Union has remained winless since the end of October and is sliding deeper into the crisis.
Werder’s Werner happy, Union’s Svensson angry
“The table is narrow and of limited significance“said Werder coach Ole Werner at the Sportschau microphone. “What makes me happy is the number of points. This shows that we are very consistent and perform well.“
Union coach Bo-Svensson was pissed off: “We didn’t defend well enough. Especially the first three goals. That hurts because that’s what usually sets us apart. How easy it is for us to concede goals – that shouldn’t be the case.“
Bremen only lets up for a short time
The green-whites went onto the pitch with concentration and determination and immediately took command. First Marvin Ducksch (8th) only hit the crossbar, then Grüll was cleared twice in an exemplary manner within four minutes. First the Austrian nodded his head in from close range, then he scored powerfully from a distance. Union’s substitute goalkeeper Alexander Schwolow, who had to step in for the injured Frederik Rönnow, was left behind.
But instead of continuing to be wide awake, Werder suddenly rested a bit, defended too timidly – and Union took ice-cold advantage of Schäfer’s breather. The goal naturally gave the Berliners a boost, the guests suddenly held on while Werder recovered – and so a very entertaining game developed in front of 42,100 spectators.
Pyrotechnics ensures Game interruption in Bremen
Weiser then dealt the Berliners another blow before the break after a great combination. After the restart, Union was initially thwarted by their own fans in their planned comeback.
The game was interrupted for a few minutes because pyrotechnics were set off in the Berlin supporters’ block. Thick clouds of smoke billowed through the Weser Stadium. When everyone could see more clearly again, both teams looked for the way forward again. But in the end only Werder celebrated.
Werder has to go to Leipzig, Union to Heidenheim
After the winter break, Union Berlin will play away at FC Heidenheim (January 11th, 3:30 p.m.). Werder Bremen plays one day later in Leipzig (January 12th, 3:30 p.m.)
