After the attack on a Christmas market in Magdeburg, the handball derby between SC Magdeburg and ThSV Eisenach planned for Sunday will not take place. The Handball Bundesliga (HBL) has approved a request from the German champions and postponed the game to a later date. It currently remains unclear whether the SCM’s home game against HC Erlangen on December 26th can take place as planned.
In a statement, SC Magdeburg was deeply affected: “Yesterday’s terrible events, which claimed numerous victims and injured people, fill us with deep sadness and compassion. Out of respect for those affected and their relatives, we have decided to submit the application We would like to show our solidarity and sympathy at such a difficult time.”
The HBL also reacted to the events and recommended that all clubs hold a minute’s silence before the games between December 21st and 27th. “This is intended to send a common signal against the inhumane attack in Magdeburg and for peaceful coexistence,” explained the association.
