Shortly before the final whistle of the game against FC Bayern, Leipzig’s Benjamin Henrichs fell to the ground screaming. Now it is clear: he will be out for a long time.

The current season is probably over early for national player Benjamin Henrichs. The RB Leipzig defender tore his Achilles tendon shortly before the end of the game against Bayern Munich (1:5) on Friday evening. The club confirmed the injury, which occurred without any outside influence, on Saturday. Henrichs will undergo surgery in Munich on Monday and will be out for several months.

Leipzig’s sports director Marcel Schäfer was affected: “This is of course a shock for Benny and another big blow for us.” He confirmed that the club would provide Henrichs with comprehensive support during this difficult phase.

The international player’s injury joins a list of serious losses at RB Leipzig. In the current season, Xaver Schlager, Xavi Simons and David Raum have already had to take a long break and are sometimes not yet at 100 percent. With Henrichs, the club is now losing another top performer.

In order to compensate for the loss, Leipzig plans to become active on the transfer market during the winter break. Lukas Klostermann and Lutsharel Geertruida could currently close the gap, but reinforcements should be brought in in the long term.
