Newly promoted Alemannia Aachen remained undefeated in their fifth game in a row. The last home game of the year against SV Wehen Wiesbaden ended goalless on Saturday.

Continuing their recent very good trend against relegated SV Wehen Wiesbaden with three draws and one win proved to be a tricky task for the Alemanni in front of their home crowd.

30 minutes without Aachen’s offensive threat

The game started slowly and it took until the 10th minute before Moritz Flotho fired a first warning shot towards the Alemannia goal for Wiesbaden. However, it flew over the crossbar clearly enough that Aachen goalkeeper Marcel Johnen didn’t have to worry.

Little was seen of Aachen until the 30th minute. Kevin Goden had a great opportunity to take the lead after a sensitive pass from his strike partner Thilo Töpken. However, he couldn’t get past keeper Florian Stritzel. So the game continued to languish as one that might have benefited from a goal, but didn’t do so in the first 45 minutes.

Short interruption after pyro-ignitions

Even in the second half, there was little to suggest from the start that an early goal could give the game a little more momentum. In this regard, the short interruption in the game due to limited visibility after pyrotechnics were set off in the Wiebaden fan block was not helpful (48th minute).

The game swung wildly back and forth at times, but at the latest in the penalty area there was either a lack of precision or the crosses and shot attempts were intercepted by the respective defense. When Alemannia coach Heiner Backhaus replaced Goden with Charlison Benschop in the 69th minute, his chance from the 30th minute was still the best of the game.

Heinz misses Aachen’s lead after a long throw-in

That changed immediately when Anton Heinz got the ball at Wiesbaden’s feet shortly afterwards after a long throw-in and header extension in the five-yard box. However, he didn’t hit it, so this great chance was wasted (70′). When Saša Strujić made his way down the left side in the 77th minute, his shot at the short corner was missed by Stritzel.

The Alemanni had the more dangerous shots, but were just as unlucky as the Wiesbaden team in their offensive actions. The guests had their best chance in the 88th minute with a free kick parried by Johnen. Even if it wasn’t enough to achieve the hoped-for victory at the end of the year, Aachen should be satisfied. 25 points after 19 games are a good starting position to achieve our goal of staying in the league after the winter break.
