Benjamin Henrichs from RB Leipzig was seriously injured in the 1:5 defeat against Bundesliga leaders FC Bayern Munich and is in danger of being out for the rest of the season. Leipzig’s assistant coach Alexander Zickler initially spoke of the suspicion of a ruptured Achilles tendon in the 27-year-old, who got stuck in the grass shortly before the end and fell to the ground without any influence from the opponent. RB officially confirmed the diagnosis late on Saturday afternoon.
The defender will undergo surgery on Monday and then “will be out for several months,” said the Bundesliga club’s posting on the social network “X”. Managing Director Sport Marcel Schäfer explained: “This is of course a shock for Benny and another big blow for us. Benny gets all the support he needs in this situation. All of us at RB Leipzig wish him a good and full recovery!”
When referee Daniel Siebert blew the whistle for the Bundesliga game on Friday evening after a few minutes of added time, Henrichs was treated on the pitch for a long time. He was later taken away on a stretcher. Henrichs is now out of the question for the next international matches against Italy in March. He has been on the pitch in all 15 of Saxony’s Bundesliga games so far.
At the end of the year, RB acted timidly, shyly and in the end almost without resistance. There was very little of the former Leipzig DNA to be seen, apart from the equalizer with Benjamin Sesko’s sixth goal of the season after an assist from Loïs Openda. Bayern made the stark difference in performance between the two teams clear in the result.
