Last year, the Beatles were at number 1 in the charts for the first time in 54 years with “Now And Then” – which probably made some music fans emotional. Paul McCartney has now revealed: They are not alone.

Paul McCartney: tears on stage

The singer sharedbecoming “very emotional” when playing the song live. “It’s really great,” said Paul McCartney. “When you introduce a new song – even if it’s actually an old song like ‘Now And Then’ – people don’t know what it is or what you do at first. But as the concert progressed, they understood it.” In the case of the single, which remained unfinished after the death of composer John Lennon in 1980, the audience increasingly turned to the bars.

“The reaction to the song is now very strong,” said Paul McCartney. “It’s great for us because it’s nice to play, and it’s especially great for me because it’s a John song. This is very emotional for me. I love it. I love what I do and the audience seems to love it too.” His words are supported by concert recordings. For example, just last weekend the Beatle had tears in his eyes while singing.

Beatles enjoy late success

The single “Now And Then,” released in 2023, is widely regarded as the final Beatles song. The remaining band members Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr put it together from demo recordings that John Lennon had recorded before his death. They originally wanted to include the song – at that time together with George Harrison – in their “Anthology” project (1995-96), but the soundtracks were unusable. Thanks to modern technology, they could be revised later. “Now And Then” is nominated for both Record Of The Year and Best Rock Performance at the 67th Grammys. The music awards ceremony will take place at the beginning of February 2025.
