Capello: “Milan, Emerson and other wrong reinforcements. But did Fonseca choose them?”

The former coach: “With Pulisic as an attacking midfielder, we needed a man on the right wing and instead Saelemaekers was sold. It was also a mistake to give away Kalulu and take Emerson Royal”

December 19 – 00:29 – MILAN

Before asking ourselves whether Milan’s summer transfer market was more or less successful, let’s ask ourselves two questions: who made the decisions? And above all, were the choices made in agreement with Paulo Fonseca, the coach? Well, already knowing these answers would help to understand. My impression is that on certain purchases, but also on some sales, no thoughtful football evaluations were made, much less the Portuguese coach’s needs were listened to.

braida andemerson

When I say thoughtful football evaluations, Ariedo Braida, an extraordinarily competent manager, always comes to mind. Braida was not only exceptional in understanding the level of a footballer, but above all he knew what it meant to play for Milan. I always remember his jokes: “That’s good, but is he from San Siro?”. It’s not like playing elsewhere, it has a different specific weight. For example, Emerson Royal doesn’t seem like Milan to me. It’s a purchase that I wouldn’t have made, because it doesn’t improve you in an area of the pitch where you already had Calabria, the young Jimenez and Kalulu if desired, who would also have been useful to you as a central defender. I also think we needed a right back, but if you buy him, you have to move up a level. And you didn’t do it with the Brazilian. Similar story for Pavlovic, although I would be more cautious about the Serbian: he is still young and we have seen too little of him. Even here, however, I wonder if it was such a necessary purchase and why, instead, not keep Kalulu who already knew the environment and is doing well at Juve.

morata and abraham

The highlight of the transfer market had to be the striker, given that Giroud had left. Morata and Abraham have arrived, but the Rossoneri fans are wondering why Milan haven’t signed a real goalscorer, one with 20 goals. How easy it was. The question to ask is: who could you buy with the same budget? I don’t see reliable and reachable bombers around. Morata, then, is a complete player, a leader and I don’t think Milan could find anything better. And Abraham as an alternative off the bench is more acceptable. In short, I wouldn’t point the finger at the management about the attacker. Just as there’s no denying that Fofana was a great catch.

the other errors

So where are the other errors? Given that Fonseca – already since the summer – prefers Pulisic as an attacking midfielder, I think that a tall attacking winger capable of making the difference was essential. In past years, Milan have always pushed more on the left and it would have been useful to balance with a similar player on the right. Unfortunately Chukwueze never caught on and there is no alternative with similar characteristics. At the same time, today wide Musah is used to give solidity to the team. But at that point, wasn’t Saelemaekers better, who Fonseca himself had said he wanted to retain just before the start of the championship? I really think Paulo hasn’t been listened to much…
