The VfL Wolfsburg footballers said goodbye to the group stage of the Champions League with a defeat. The “Wolves” lost 0-1 (0-0) on Tuesday evening to the French champions Olympique Lyon, who also won their sixth game.

In the duel between the teams that had already qualified for the knockout phase, the Lower Saxony team showed a good performance, especially defensively, against the former serial winners of the premier class. Lyon hardly had any chances to score, a draw would have been fair.

You will find out who Wolfsburg will have to face in the quarter-finals in the draw on February 7th. The return matches will be played on March 18th and 27th.

VfL starting eleven changed to eight positions

VfL coach Tommy Stroot made good on his announcement and started the rotation. There were eight changes in the starting line-up compared to the Rome game a week ago (6:1). Among others, Anneke Borbe was in goal, and the four-goal scorer Sveindis Jónsdóttir was allowed to start this time – regular players such as Merle Frohms, Lynn Wilms, Jule Brand, Lena Lattwein, Lineth Beerensteyn and Rebecka Blomqvist initially only sat on the bench.

VfL women keep Lyon away from the goal

As expected, the hosts immediately took command. Above all, it was always on the left side, where the fast Tabitha Chawinga was on the move. But compared to the first leg (0:2), the “Wolves” defended well and it wasn’t dangerous for goalkeeper Borbe.

As good as the VfL women were defensively, the offensive game could also be improved. Although they switched well and quickly several times after winning the ball, they also failed to pose serious problems for the French defense.

“Look for the deals,” Stroot’s demand could be heard clearly from the sidelines. The French champions had the only half-dangerous finish, but Borbe effortlessly caught Kadidiatou Diani’s shot (39′).

Van de Donk scores late for Lyon

The spectators saw the same picture in the second round. Lyon couldn’t find a way through, but VfL acted more lively: Justine Kielland missed the Bundesliga club’s first good opportunity to score, and Christiane Endler was able to save in the Olympique goal (55th).

But Lyon had the better end in the end: Substitute Danielle van de Donk scored from close range to make it 1-0 (81′). That was the decision, the “she-wolves” had little to counter it. Jule Brand still had the opportunity to equalize, but her long-range shot flew wide of the goal to the left (89′).
