The top German ski crossers Florian Wilmsmann and Daniela Maier missed out on the podium at the World Cup in Arosa. Wilmsmann could at least be happy about a small success. Maier was eliminated in the quarter-finals and did not make it into the top 3 for the first time this season. Two Canadians won the races, and there was even a Canadian triple victory in the women’s race. The World Cup was overshadowed by a serious fall for the Swiss Fanny Smith.
At least we won the small final: ski crosser Florian Wilmsmann came fifth at the World Cup in Arosa, Switzerland. The 28-year-old, who traveled to Graubünden as the World Cup leader, had to give up the top World Cup position to the Italian Simone Deromedis after missing the final.
Wilmsmann was very happy in the semi-finals
Wilmsmann drove superiorly to victory in the small final. He had previously been unluckily eliminated in the semi-finals. The German was on course for the final until the last jump, but was then intercepted by David Mobaerg. Shaking his head, Wilmsmann was annoyed after crossing the finish line and went into the small finale with anger in his stomach.
Canadian Howden celebrates first win of the season
The Canadian Reece Howden won the men’s final ahead of Deromedis and Mobaerg. For 26-year-old Howden, who had already won the qualification in Arosa, it was the first win of the season. Overall, he celebrated his twelfth World Cup victory.
Four other starters from the German men’s team were in the final stages of the round of 16: Cornel Renn, Florian Fischer, Jonas Bachl-Staudinger and Tim Hronek were eliminated here. It was already over for Niklas Illig in the 16th final.
Daniela Maier without a podium for the first time
In the third race of the season, Daniela Maier went without a podium finish for the first time. The 28-year-old, who celebrated a successful comeback in Val Thorens the previous week after a long injury break, was eliminated in the quarter-finals in third place in her race. The race also ended in the quarterfinals for Luisa Klapprott and Veronika Redder.
Canadian triple victory among women
Canadian Marielle Thompson once again secured victory. The 32-year-old won her 33rd World Cup. The four-time overall World Cup winner won her final in dominant fashion. India Sherret and Hannah Schmid ensured a completely Canadian podium, coming second and third ahead of France’s Marielle Berger-Sabbatel.
Top athlete Fanny Smith suffered a serious fall
The women’s race was overshadowed by a serious fall for three-time overall World Cup winner Fanny Smith. The Swiss and compatriot Saskja Lack touched each other so badly in the semifinals that both fell. Smith’s upper body was so awkwardly on the edge of a hill that she had to be treated on site and later taken down to the valley on a sledge. Nothing was initially known about the health of the 32-year-old, 31-time World Cup winner.
