After his mild stroke, iconic coach Gregg Popovich is not thinking about retiring from the NBA, even at the age of 75.
“No one is more excited to see me back on the bench than the talented people who have guided my rehabilitation process”said Popovich in a statement on Monday (December 16, 2024). The medical staff have “I quickly learned that I’m not exactly trainable”.
Popovich has been missing from the San Antonio Spurs since the incident on November 2nd, and assistant Mitch Johnson is currently leading the team as interim coach. “It was an unexpected six weeks for my family and me”the statement said, providing support during this time “really overwhelming” been, the family for it “eternally grateful”.
Nobody celebrated more NBA victories than Popovich
The former US national coach has been in charge of the Spurs since 1996; no other coach has stayed with a team for so long. Popovich led San Antonio to five championships (1999, 2003, 2005, 2007 and 2014), and he also leads the all-time list of NBA coaches with 1,390 wins in the main round and 170 wins in the playoffs. He celebrated the gold medal with the USA at the Olympic Games in Tokyo 2021.
