Emotional moment in London
Darts World Cup – Cameron Menzies bursts into tears
12/17/2024 – 2:02 a.mReading time: 2 minutes
Scot Cameron Menzies suffered an emotional breakdown at the Darts World Cup. His competitor Leonard Gates consoled “Cammy”.
During his matches he often jokes with the spectators and also likes to talk to himself, which he says calms him down. But this time the pressure was apparently too high for Cameron Menzies. During the Darts World Cup in London, the Scottish professional collapsed emotionally in the game against Leonard Gates. Menzies began crying on stage as he was unhappy with his performance.
The fans jeered and cheered, further increasing the pressure on Menzies. First he missed the doubles several times, then he didn’t hit the triple 20. Despite his efforts, he couldn’t recover and lost the match 1:3.
Menzies recently started working with a mental trainer, Bild reported, apparently to better cope with the pressure on stage. He had often shown difficulties in previous games. Against Gates, he averaged just 83.7 and hit just 5 of 32 double attempts. When Gates hugged him after the game, Menzies burst into tears again and quickly retreated to the dressing room.
Before the match, Menzies had the loving support of his girlfriend Fallon Sherrock. For “Cammy,” this love story began with a bucket full of chicken pieces. The eccentric Scot and darts colleague Sherrock fell in love in a fast food restaurant after years of friendship, as he revealed to the English newspaper “The Sun”. The two have been a couple ever since. A story that suits the likeable but strange Menzies.
Debutant Kai Gotthardt, on the other hand, surprisingly won his opening match at the Darts World Cup in London – and also defied a broken dart. The 29-year-old from Esslingen am Neckar beat the Scotsman Alan Soutar 3-1 sets in the first round at his premiere at Alexandra Palace. In the second round he will now face world number eight Stephen Bunting (England) on Friday afternoon (around 4.45 p.m./Sport1 and DAZN).
Already when the score was 1:2 in the first set there was a bizarre scene. Since the necessary spare part for his broken arrow was missing, “The Tunnel” Gotthardt had to make the long journey to the warm-up area.
“This has never happened to me in over four years. And then the dart breaks on the biggest stage in the world. I was perplexed, it was crazy,” said Gotthardt on Sport1, “but I pulled through.”
In the meantime, opponent Soutar had been waiting on the stage and having fun with the singing fans in the “Ally Pally”. With a new arrow, Gotthardt gave up the first set, but then secured three rounds in a row.
On Wednesday evening (around 9:10 p.m./Sport1 and DAZN) Ricardo Pietreczko will be the second German to take part in the tournament. The top German player Martin Schindler, Gabriel Clemens, Florian Hempel and debutant Niko Springer are also qualified.
