‘Too long in his panties’

Buddy Vedder responds to the fierce criticism from de Volkskrant that he was in his underwear for too long. “Yes, I have to wait until I finally put on pants and a shirt. Terrible.”

Hein Janssen, a reviewer from de Volkskrant, went to see the musical Saturday Night Fever and wrote a fairly positive review about it: he awards four out of five stars. And this gentleman is also quite enthusiastic about leading actor Buddy Vedder. Yet there is one thing that does cause irritation: Buddy’s alleged vanity.

In front of the mirror

What bothers Hein? “A crucial scene in the film is the one in which Tony changes clothes to go dancing, and exchanges his daily clothes for an exciting suit,” he writes in de Volkskrant.

“In his black underpants he looks at himself from head to toe, and that gives him self-confidence. Buddy Vedder also seems to have a great personal trainer, but he spends a little too much time in front of the mirror.”

What does Buddy say?

Buddy responds &C to that criticism. “Do you know that at first I found that the most difficult scene, the one in my underwear? Are you standing there in a room with eight hundred people, who have to wait until I finally put on pants and a shirt. Terrible. Until the drummer of the band asked me why I was ashamed.”

“Isn’t this about Tony, the main character, not about me? Wow, that was so true. I am not standing there as myself, but as Tony, a boy who is proud of his body. I haven’t had any trouble with it since.”

Vanity

Although Buddy has to admit that he is also quite a bit vain. “Of course there is vanity involved – I want to be trained, look in the mirror and see that those packs are great – but I mainly do it because the role requires it of me.”

“I’m a thin boy by nature and I didn’t find that credible. Tony is a street fighter, so I wanted to look like someone who can hold his own.”

Addictive

Is Buddy now addicted to his six-pack? “It’s nice to be trained, but I have the feeling that after the last performance it will become less so. I like to exercise, so I just keep doing it three times a week to stay fit, but six times a week might be a bit exaggerated.”

“And because I don’t have much talent for being wide, it will be a little less, but I don’t mind that.”
