A bang for the handball Bundesliga team SG Flensburg-Handewitt. One day after the defeat at the RN Löwen, the Schleswig-Holstein team parted ways with coach Nicolej Krickau. Together with assistant coach Anders Eggert, sports director Ljubomir Vranjes is currently looking after the team.
“We discussed our situation in detail in the committee and weighed up the pros and cons. It was definitely not an easy decision that we ultimately made with a heavy heart,” said SG managing director Holger Glandorf. Although the SG won the prestigious derby at THW Kiel in mid-November, they then lost a lot of ground in the title race with two defeats in four games.
Glandorf: Season goals at risk
Glandorf misses the “desired further development in the team” and complained: “Our performance in the games against the top clubs in the league is not enough to achieve our goals this season.”
Vranjes also assesses it this way: “We still have four important and groundbreaking games ahead of us until the end of the year, which we have to make as successful as possible. The team now has to use a lot of emotion and passion to ensure that we get our SG back on track bring.”
Vranjes doesn’t want a double role
The former successful coach, who won the European Cup Winners’ Cup (2012) and the Champions League (2014) with the SG, is stepping in for the time being, but the Swede makes it a point to emphasize: “This is an interim solution.” He doesn’t want to have a dual role at the SG: “We want to find a successor for Nicolej as quickly as possible.”
Krickau came to the fjord a year and a half ago and won the European League last season. Third place was enough in the league and in the DHB Cup.
The Flensburg team will continue in the Bundesliga on Monday (7.30 p.m.): Then the Schleswig-Holstein team will host the second-placed Füchse Berlin.
