The protest was announced on December 5 by a private individual, but research by the municipality shows that Extinction Rebellion and Greenpeace were behind it. About a hundred participants are expected, the organizer informed the municipality.

According to the municipality, the demonstrators do not only want to demonstrate against aviation pollution, but ‘high risk actions’ are also on the program. XR and Greenpeace have not shared the full program of the protest with the municipality – despite requests to do so.

Rules for demonstration

The municipality therefore feels compelled to announce an emergency ordinance. It contains the rules that demonstrators must adhere to. For example, it is prohibited to take objects or substances with you that could disrupt public order. The municipality is referring, among other things, to drones, grinders and glue.

Demonstrators are also expressly prohibited from climbing over the fences (with or without the aid of vehicles), chaining themselves to them or blocking them. In fact, demonstrators must remain at least two meters from the fences.

Chained and cycling demonstrators

In the document announcing the emergency ordinance, the mayor explicitly refers to the climate protest of November 2022. Then hundreds of demonstrators entered the platform at Schiphol-Oost, which is mainly used for private flights. The demonstrators had committed “a large number of offenses and crimes and seriously disrupted public order and security.”

Some of them chained themselves to a Canadian Air Force plane, others sat under one of the private jets or cycled around the tarmac. Ultimately, the Royal Military Police stopped about 200 people.
