The Netherlands has submitted the National Implementation Plan of the European Asylum and Migration Pact to the European Commission. Minister Faber (Asylum and Migration) discussed the Migration Pact on Thursday, December 12, at the European Union in Brussels.
Minister Faber: “Submitting this plan is important for the proper implementation of the pact. Together in Europe we will ensure, among other things, better guarded external borders, better screening and faster procedures. With this we are taking an important step towards a stricter asylum policy. That’s what matters to me.”
European asylum and migration pact
The asylum and reception systems of the Netherlands and many other EU member states have been under pressure for some time. That is why stricter measures are necessary within the Netherlands and abroad. The migration pact, which took four years to negotiate and was officially adopted on May 14, 2024, will help with this.
The migration pact includes 9 regulations and 1 directive that should ensure that the influx of asylum seekers to the Netherlands and other European member states is limited and the burden is better shared between EU member states. The new rules will apply from June 12, 2026.
Contents of the migration pact
The core of the migration pact is to strengthen Europe’s external borders by introducing screening of foreigners and an accelerated border procedure for asylum seekers from countries with little prospect of residence. Solidarity with member states under migratory pressure is also part of the migration pact.
Implementation
The National Implementation Plan for the European Asylum and Migration Pact contains the steps that the Netherlands will take to be ready for implementation from June 12, 2026. The chain partners involved are working hard on the implementation, together with the Ministry of Asylum and Migration, to ensure that all EU -to implement legislation.
In the near future, this means that, among other things, work will be done on renewing the asylum procedure, involving all organizations in the changes resulting from the migration pact, and adapting the reception landscape so that there are sufficient suitable locations by June 12, 2026. for the different target groups.
