More than two years after the violent death of Toon Damen in Tilburg (37), the police hope to solve this case with new clues. On Tuesday evening, Opsporing Verzocht pointed out, among other things, a gray Toyota that had been set on fire in the Leijpark. That was a day after Damen was killed. It also became more clear about the suspected perpetrators.
Investigation of that burnt-out car yielded traces that do not rule out a link with Damen’s murder. No more is said about this in the AVROTROS investigation program. The police are also still in the dark about what the motive or reason could be for shooting Toon Damen.
‘Acquainted with the police and the judiciary’
Damen was also known to the police and the judiciary. As a teenager, he was convicted of, among other things, theft and fraud, which he committed with a number of young friends. In 2008, when he was in his early twenties, Toon shot and killed one of those acquaintances. He received a twelve-year prison sentence for that.
In 2016 he himself was the target of an attack. He survived that. On the night of August 1 to 2, 2022, he was shot at close range in Borselestraat. He was shot at when he got home. Resuscitation was to no avail. His father died in a similar manner years earlier.
Despite intensive investigations, the police have not yet been able to arrest anyone for involvement in the August 2022 settlement.
The evening before that fatal shooting, Damen was captured by cameras in the center of Breda. He was there for about two hours before he left De Barones parking garage in his Mercedes A-class car park around half past eleven. He looked relaxed. He had exchanged the shoes Damen was wearing earlier for bath slippers.
Waiting for privacy settings…
The drive to the house where he was staying at the time, on Borselestraat, can be completed in half an hour. However, it was already about a quarter to two in the morning when he got there. The police wonder why Damen took so long this time.
“Do you have it?”
It is striking that as soon as he parked his car at the house and got out, two perpetrators ran towards him. Several shots were immediately fired and a woman who spoke to Omroep Brabant a day later heard one of the perpetrators shout: “Do you have it?”

Witnesses appear to have said that two men in black clothing ran away from Borselestraat. A scooter was then said to have been heard in the area of the Langedijk. Local residents may have found items on August 2 or the following days that were not there before, the police say in Opsporing Verzocht. But she can also use other information.
For example, about the Toyota that burned down. The car turned out to have been stolen in Waalre more than a year and a half earlier, in January 2021. There are strong indications that the car has been parked in the border region south of Tilburg for a long time.
