His health condition has caught up with the singer several times in the past. Now Sum 41 have canceled their Australian tour.
Sum 41 have completely canceled their planned Australian tour in December 2024. The reason for this is the ongoing health problems of frontman Deryck Whibley.
Pneumonia again
“It is with deep sadness and regret that we announce that our Australian tour in 2024 cannot take place,” the band announced on social media about the “Good Things Festival,” which was also canceled. “We were really looking forward to delivering on this tour from December 4th to 12th and meeting our Australian fans once again. Now that we are here, with the involvement and direction of several Australian doctors, it is clear that Deryck is too ill to perform. We understand and appreciate your disappointment – we are also very sad.”
Sum 41 had previously canceled a show in Brisbane on December 4 because they were concerned about Whibley’s well-being. “Unfortunately we have to make the difficult decision to cancel tonight’s show in Brisbane due to Deryck being diagnosed with pneumonia,” the band said in a statement. “He receives the best possible treatment on site.”
Ongoing health setbacks
Deryck Whibley, the 44-year-old frontman of the Canadian punk rock band, has struggled with significant health challenges in recent years. He had already had to cancel a festival appearance in 2011 due to pneumonia. He also suffered severe alcohol poisoning in 2014, which led to liver and kidney failure. As a result, he had to be put into an artificial coma.
In September 2023, he was hospitalized with severe pneumonia. Because of the heavy strain on his heart, there was a risk of a heart attack. After his discharge, he recovered at home under the care of his mother, a registered nurse, and his wife, Ariana Cooper. After returning home, Whibley updated his fans on social media at the time: “I would like to thank everyone for the outpouring of love and support. Even though I’m not over the pneumonia yet and I’ve been told that I’ll have to be prepared for some sort of roller coaster illness over the next few weeks, I’m staying positive and doing my best to get through it all.”
Despite these recurring health setbacks, Sum 41 continues to plan their final concert for January 2025 in Toronto. Because in May last year, the group announced that they were splitting up after 27 years together. They released their eighth and final album, HEAVEN :X: HELL, in March. The singer’s memoirs, “Walking Disaster: My Life Through Heaven and Hell,” were also published this fall.
