Maurizio Sarri has officially resigned as Lazio coach. The Italian football club announced this on Wednesday (March 13, 2024).
Giovanni Martusciello will be the new coach of the struggling ninth-placed team in Serie A. The 52-year-old was previously an assistant coach at Lazio.
After initial speculation about Sarri’s departure, former Lazio striker and 2014 German world champion Miroslav Klose was also discussed as a successor. Klose himself was confident he could take on the job at his former club. “Yes, of course, of course. I can be there tomorrow. I would do it,” said the 45-year-old record goalscorer for the German national team.
Out in the Champions League against Bayern Munich
The 65-year-old Sarri has been coaching the Romans since the summer of 2021. However, there was recently a crisis under the Italian: Lazio was in the round of 16 against FC Bayern Munich after a 1-0 home win with a 3-0 defeat on Tuesday (March 5th, 2024). -Second leg of the Champions League clearly failed.
There have recently been three defeats in a row in Serie A. Lazio thanked Sarri for the work he had done and wished Sarri every success both personally and professionally.
