Joy Beune impressed again in the 1500 meters. She rode a 1:52.65. Beune defeated Groenewoud in a direct match. She took a lead over her opponent in the second round and struck very hard, especially in the final round. Her winning time is an improvement on Ireen Wüst’s track record of 1.52.81.
Antoinette Rijpma-de Jong lost her ride to the Chinese Han Mei with a time of 1.53.45 and came third. With the second time of 1.52.97, the Chinese Rijpma-de Jong and Groenewoud passed in the rankings.
With her victory, Beune also takes the lead in the rankings. The 5000 meters later on Sunday will make the decision. Beune – the reigning world champion at that distance – defends a lead of 2.77 seconds over Mei, while the gap to number three Groenewoud is 3.10 seconds. Antoinette Rijpma-de Jong is also not without a chance for the world title. Her gap to Beune is 3.35 seconds.
