Justin Njinmah and Werder Bremen will face his former club Borussia Dortmund on Saturday (6:30 p.m.). Before the duel, the striker spoke about his steep rise – which also indirectly has to do with BVB star Niclas Füllkrug.
“The fact that I’m getting so much playing time and scoring in my first season is of course an incredible feeling,” said Njinmah in an interview with the “Ruhr Nachrichten”. The 23-year-old was on loan at Borussia Dortmund from January 2022 to summer 2023, but was mostly only used in the second team.
After his return to Bremen, Njinmah fought for more and more playing time and is currently in eight starting eleven appearances in the Bundesliga for SVW. In total, the attacker has five hits and two assists.
“I just always have the feeling that I can score a goal in every game. I can hardly remember a game in which I wasn’t in a goal-dangerous situation,” said Njinmah, who explained: “Our game system is certainly an advantage, but I can also adapt well with my strengths.”
The Hamburg native also made it clear that he benefited from Niclas Füllkrug’s move from Werder to BVB: “Of course, with Niclas Füllkrug, we would have another striker who would be here with us. That probably wouldn’t have been to my advantage.”
Njinmah believes there are chances for the national team
DFB managing director Andreas Rettig recently said that Njinmah is in the national team’s further focus. But the attacker doesn’t imagine any realistic chances.
“That’s of course nice to hear. But at the same time I also know that I’m still new to the Bundesliga and still have a lot to prove to myself and the people out there,” he emphasized.
However, he hasn’t booked a vacation for the summer yet. “There are still ten Bundesliga games left this season. And in football things can happen very quickly,” noted Njinmah, but admitted: “It’s still very unlikely that I’ll play the European Championships at home in the summer – to be honest you can be.” There has been no contact with national coach Julian Nagelsmann so far.
Njinmah could play not only for Germany but also for Nigeria. “That would definitely be conceivable,” he said.
Before the duel against Borussia Dortmund, Njinmah sent a declaration of war to his former club: “I’m ready for Dortmund on Saturday. I’ll give everything to win. We want to keep setting the needle. Especially at home in the Weserstadion with our fans We’ve already shown at the back this season that we can annoy bigger teams. That’s exactly what we want to do with Dortmund.”
