Victor Gyökeres (25) scores and scores. Interest in the former St. Paulian in the service of Sporting Lisbon continues to increase, and the Swede’s market value continues to rise accordingly. After the update in the Portuguese League on Friday, Gyökeres is now one of the biggest market value winners in the world this season. In terms of squad value, his team is a good deal closer to city rivals Benfica.

Gyökeres is up another 10 million euros. After 18 goals in the championship, five in the Europa League and nine in the domestic cup competitions plus eleven assists, a total of 43 goals in 36 games, the national player is now valued at 55 million euros. That’s a whopping €42m more than at the start of the season, when Sporting signed the striker from Coventry City for €21m. In the ranking of the biggest market value winners since last summer, the renewed plus puts Gyökere’s standing among the three most highly valued professionals in the world. Numerous updates are still pending in other leagues in March. In Portugal it is by far the largest increase in millions of the current season.

It was not only his performance data that contributed to Gyökeres’ strong increase in value, but also the resulting prominence of interested parties. Arsenal and Chelsea were mentioned as possible contenders for a transfer, as was Borussia Dortmund previously. Gyökeres’ position in the Portuguese league changed as a result of the update in that he no longer has the position as most valuable player with Benfica talent Joao Neves (19) shares, but is the sole front runner. Neves’ market value remains untouched in this update after increases of a total of 35 million euros since the start of the season.

Market values Portugal: Biggest appreciation for Varela – only devaluations for Benfica

Even greater than Gyökeres’ plus in this update is that of Alan Varela from FC Porto. The defensive midfielder, who received a small devaluation at Boca Juniors in Argentina last summer, improved his valuation by 5 million euros in Portugal in December. Now it goes up by another 11 million to 25 million euros, which means an increase in value of almost 80 percent. The 22-year-old – again someone who was associated with BVB – became a key player for the Dragões, only had to sit out once since matchday 4 due to a yellow card suspension and, in addition to the alleged interest from Dortmund, also attracted interest from FC Liverpool on itself.

Porto, meanwhile, is also the only team in the league that can keep up with Sporting in terms of value growth, although the percentage increase of almost 21 percent is even greater than the Lisboners (16%). Porto will bring 26.5 million euros more into its books after the update. At Sporting it is 27 million euros more, which brings the Leões a good deal closer to the market value leader in the league, Benfica, because the current update even results in a small minus in the squad value of their city rivals. Not a single Águias player recorded a plus. However, there are devaluations for three veterans: Juan Bernat (31) and Ángel Di María (36) are reduced in their valuation by one million to 5 million and 4 million euros, respectively, João Mário (31) even by 3 million 6 million euros.

This is how transfer market market values work

The transfer market market values are created taking into account various pricing models as well as a strong involvement of the transfer market community, which deals with the values in detailed discussions. The transfer market market values cannot generally be equated with the transfer fees actually paid.

The goal is not to predict a price, but rather an expected value. When determining the market value, both individual transfer modalities and situational conditions are relevant to a certain extent. Examples of this are listed here. Transfermarkt does not use an algorithm (for detailed market value definition).
