DFB women: Wück succeeds Hrubesch as national coach

Christian Wück becomes national coach for the German women. He succeeds interim coach Horst Hrubesch, who took over the position from Martina Voss-Tecklenburg.

Until he takes over his new position, Wück will look after the U15 juniors, as the DFB announced. Maren Meinert will be Wück’s assistant coach. “Coaching this team, further developing the existing individual quality of the players and thus making the team fit for success in the future is one of the most exciting and responsible tasks in German football.”said Wück, according to the statement.

DFB President Bend Neuendorf said Wück has “He has proven in the past that he can develop personalities and form teams into a cohesive unit. I am convinced that he is the right person”. Wück led the German men’s U17 team to the title at the 2023 World Cup in Indonesia. Wück had previously won the European Championship title with the team in June 2023.

Hrubesch should lead the team to the Olympic football tournament

At the DFB, Wück succeeds interim coach Horst Hrubesch, who took over from Martina Voss-Tecklenburg after the disappointing 2023 World Cup, who also did not remain in office due to health problems.

Hrubesch is leading the German selection to the Summer Games in Paris. At the beginning of April, Germany will begin qualifying for the 2025 European Championships in Switzerland with the games in Austria (Friday, April 5th, 2024) and against Iceland (Tuesday, April 9th, 2024). Here too, Hrubesch remains responsible.

The decision for Wück was the first personnel decision of this importance for Nia Künzer, the new sports director of the DFB. Künzer was introduced in January and the women’s national team is her responsibility. The hope now is that Wück will be able to help Germany’s female footballers regain their old strength.

After the European Championships, possibly the home World Cup in Germany

The 2023 World Cup took place in Australia and New Zealand. The DFB is applying for the 2027 World Cup together with Belgium and the Netherlands, and there are further applications from Brazil as well as jointly from the USA and Mexico. The decision will be made on May 17th at the FIFA Congress in Bangkok.
