Pusher Sandro Michel reports for the first time after a serious accident

In mid-February, bobsleigh pusher Sandro Michel suffered a life-threatening injury in the Altenberg ice track. Now the Swiss is reporting for the first time about his difficult time with numerous operations.

He wrote a long post on Instagram in which he describes the difficult time after his life-threatening injuries. “The last two weeks haven’t been easy for me. After a serious accident in the ice channel in Altenberg, I was in the intensive care unit in Dresden for a week and a half. I’m currently back in hospital in Switzerland.”

Michel: “I’m lucky to be able to write this post”

The 27-year-old continued: “To date, four operations have been necessary to ensure my survival and to patch myself back up to some extent. I think I was very lucky in misfortune and can/must be happy to be able to write this post today.”

Pusher Michel of the Swiss four-man bobsleigh fell during a training run on February 13th and sustained serious injuries to his hip and chest. After the fall, he was lying unconscious on the track when the accident bobsleigh slipped back in the uphill finish area and hit Michel.

He was then flown to the Dresden University Hospital and operated on. His pilot Michael Vogt suffered a concussion. The other two pushers, Andreas Haas and Dominik Hufschmid, were slightly injured and will be competing again at the World Championships in Winterberg this weekend.

At the end of his contribution, Michel thanked everyone who supported him after the accident: “I would especially like to thank my doctors, Swiss Sliding, family, girlfriend and my team! You gave me the support during this time, that I needed and were there for me when I needed you most.”
