THW Kiel has already made it clear that it will reach the Champions League quarter-finals. The German handball record champion won on Wednesday evening at Pick Szeged with 28:27 (16:14).
Coach Filip Jicha’s team can no longer be pushed out of the first two places in Group A after the hard-fought victory in Hungary on the last matchday. This means that the Kiel team, who only have a theoretical chance of defending their title in the Bundesliga and have already been eliminated from the DHB Cup, are now only one step away from taking part in the Final Four in Cologne (June 8th and 9th).
The quarter-finals, for which in addition to the two best teams in the two preliminary round groups, four other teams qualify via a play-off round, will take place on April 24th and May 1st.
Kiel fighting strong in the “Hell of Szeged”
League leaders Kiel showed a strong fighting performance in the “Hell of Szeged” and temporarily took a four-goal lead at 12:8 (19th). As the game went on, Jicha’s team found fewer means to counter the Hungarians’ attack. In the exciting final phase, the four-time Champions League winner kept a cool head.
The best thrower for Kiel was the Swedish backcourt player Eric Johansson with eight goals. Elias Ellefsen a Skipagötu also showed a strong performance with five goals.
