The U19s of the Bundesliga football club Mainz 05 have knocked the next big name out of the tournament in the UEFA Youth League and are sensationally in the quarter-finals.
After the two-time title holders FC Barcelona in the second round, the German A-youth champions also defeated the top English team Manchester City 2-1 (1-1) in front of 7,000 fans in the atmospheric and sold-out Bruchwegstadion in the round of 16.
Tim Müller (16th) and Philipp Schulz from the penalty spot (52nd) scored for the 05ers, Justin Oboavwoduo equalized for the guests (45th + 1).
The debutant will now go to the quarter-finals on the 12th/13th. March against FC Porto – again in the Bruchwaldstadion. There, coach Benjamin Hoffmann’s team had already defeated Barcelona (title winners in 2014 and 2018) 6-5 on penalties three weeks ago.
Two more German teams will contest their round of 16 on Wednesday: Bayern Munich hosts Feyenoord Rotterdam (4 p.m.), RB Leipzig visits Real Madrid (6 p.m.). There has never been a German title holder since it was first held in the 2013/2014 season.
