Borussia Dortmund is simply not getting going this season. Lothar Matthäus confirms that BVB has a “quality problem” and also suggests a consistent change.
Borussia Dortmund suffered its first defeat of the second half of the season in the Bundesliga on Sunday against TSG Hoffenheim (2:3). Since RB Leipzig lost to FC Bayern (1:2), the Westphalians are still in fourth place in the table.
To ensure that qualification for the Champions League does not come into serious danger, BVB must prevent further bankruptcies in the coming weeks.
“Although BVB had scored a lot of points by Sunday in 2024, in terms of football they are performing far below the expectations that one can have of this team,” commented Lothar Matthäus on Dortmund’s recent performances in his “Sky” column. The TV expert “does not allow himself to be blinded by the results”.
“The team is unsettled, something is wrong with them. Apparently they have a virus that is slowing them down. Whether it’s Edin Terzic? I don’t know,” said Matthäus.
The 62-year-old criticized: “As a coach, I can’t say: ‘I actually expected more from the team.’ When I have a squad, I know what I’m getting into and that I will be measured by performances and results with that squad.”

The football expert also complained that many new additions from the past 18 months had “not met” expectations. “This creates a quality problem,” said Matthäus: “You can’t expect Jadon Sancho to burn down the Dortmund stadium after his long break.”
According to the 1990 world champion, BVB should “act future-oriented and make a big change.”
“After that, Mats Hummels and Marco Reus should no longer play a role, even if these players have great merit for the club. Even if I still see Mats Hummels as one of the best central defenders, if I make a change, then I have to complete it and must not take the emotional world into account,” says Matthäus.
