FRANKFURT (Dow Jones)–The Essen-based energy company RWE wants to expand its green electricity business in Germany and build more solar systems on motorways. “We see great opportunities for photovoltaic projects on highways,” said Katja Wunschel, head of RWE subsidiary Renewables Europe & Australia, to the Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung. RWE is currently looking for suitable areas, including in North Rhine-Westphalia. According to the manager, the state of Bavaria could serve as a model. “Bavaria has shown what potential lies in solar fields around motorways,” she said.
Wunschel advocates removing obstacles to the construction of solar systems next to motorways: “So far it has been possible to use areas up to 200 meters next to motorways in a privileged manner, i.e. without a development plan. We advocate expanding the area to up to 500 meters. ”
