In the first leg of the round of 16 against PSV Eindhoven (1-1), Borussia Dortmund had to do without Gregor Kobel at short notice. Now worries are growing about the BVB goalkeeper, another loss is looming.
Goalkeeper Gregor Kobel’s injury is causing concern for runner-up Borussia Dortmund. According to the “Ruhr Nachrichten”, there is a big question mark behind the Swiss’s appearance in the Bundesliga game against TSG Hoffenheim on Sunday (5:30 p.m.).
So far, BVB has not commented in more detail about the leading player’s injury. According to the regional newspaper, since coach Edin Terzic’s team is not playing on Saturday, but just the next day, there is still a little hope that Kobel will make it in time.
The 26-year-old had already had to undergo treatment during the Black and Yellows’ away game at VfL Wolfsburg (1-1) when fan protests caused an interruption. On Tuesday in the Champions League in Eindhoven (1:1), the goalkeeper only gave the signal shortly before kick-off that he could not play the game. Instead, substitute Alexander Meyer came into the starting line-up and provided strong support.
Meyer has already made 16 appearances at BVB
How often Gregor Kobel has to struggle with injuries is shown by his deputy’s deployment statistics alone. Since moving from Jahn Regensburg to BVB in the summer of 2022, Meyer has already made 16 competitive appearances, four in the current season alone.
Last September, Kobel also had to cancel his trip to the Swiss national team due to thigh problems, and in November he complained again about muscular problems. The vice-captain then missed the Bundesliga second half games against Bochum (3:1) and Heidenheim (0:0) due to illness.
Gregor Kobel moved from VfB Stuttgart to Borussia Dortmund for 15 million euros in the summer of 2021, where he immediately received number one status. His contract was extended until 2028 last October.
