The head coach position at FC Bayern will be vacant by summer at the latest. In addition to Bayer Leverkusen’s Xabi Alonso, the candidates also include Sebastian Hoeneß from VfB Stuttgart. Now the former Munich player has commented on a possible return to the Isar.
Sebastian Hoeneß “does not want to take part” in the speculation surrounding himself about a possible move to FC Bayern, as he made clear on Thursday afternoon at VfB Stuttgart’s matchday press conference before the game against 1. FC Köln (Saturday, 3:30 p.m.). : “That’s not appropriate.”
It is also “not the first time” that he has been associated with his old employer. “That doesn’t particularly affect me.”
Bayern Munich’s CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen said during the season that the 41-year-old would definitely be on the list if a coaching position becomes available in the future. “In the long term, you can never rule out something like this. We are watching its development. We will see what the future brings,” said Dreesen at “Bild”.
Hoeneß wants to concentrate on the “essentials” at VfB Stuttgart
The nephew of Bayern patron Uli Hoeneß moved from RB Leipzig to FC Bayern in the summer of 2017, where he first coached the U19s and then the second team. The step into the Bundesliga followed three years later: after almost two years in Hoffenheim, he took over VfB Stuttgart in April 2023.
With the Swabians he initially managed to avert relegation to the 2nd Bundesliga via relegation. In the current season, VfB is one of the big surprises; after 22 match days, the club is on course for the Champions League in third place.
Hoeneß made it clear, also with a view to the Bayern rumors: “Everyone can see that I like being here. I want to continue to concentrate on the essentials.” His contract with VfB is dated until 2025, and according to “Bild” they want to extend the working paper with the successful coach “as quickly as possible”.
