In a new study, American researchers describe how the immune system of some patients with early-stage Multiple Sclerosis (MS) reacts strongly to cells infected with the Epstein-Barr virus. This research is the latest in a long line of studies indicating that the virus may be involved in the development of MS. But how exactly does the fork sit in the stem? Are there any other viruses linked to brain and nerve disorders? And will vaccines against this be possible in the future? Professor Niels Helings (UHasselt), who is researching the link between the virus and MS, provides an explanation.
