The 1978/79 season of the English First Division is now fully available in the Transfermarkt database. The Reds under coach Bob Paisley played the best season in the history of the league. Liverpool were a power, especially in front of their own crowd. In 21 games, Sir Kenny Dalglish and Co. emerged victorious 19 times, with only one draw in the duels with Leeds and the derby against Everton FC. Keeper Ray Clemence only had to reach behind him four times in the home stadium.
In the European Cup, the final stop was already in round one. Last year’s champions Nottingham Forest eliminated Liverpool and started a successful run that ended with the title win in the Munich Olympic Stadium against the Swedish representatives Malmö FF. Nottingham finished second in the league and coach Brian Clough’s team also won the League Cup.
Nottingham completed a record transfer in February 1979 when striker Trevor Francis was signed by later relegated Birmingham City for the equivalent of a good 1 million euros. The transfer was to pay off straight away, as Francis scored the decisive goal in a 1-0 win in the final game of the European Cup.
Frank Worthington from Bolton Wanderers was the top goalscorer of the season with 24 goals before he surprisingly moved to Birmingham City in the second division the following season.
Arsenal finished seventh in the First Division that season, but consoled themselves by winning the FA Cup. The “Gunners”, who only managed promotion to the fourth round in the fourth replay against Sheffield Wednesday, defeated Manchester United 3-2 at Wembley Stadium after a memorable final.
